Hotel Review: Z Hotel Shoreditch

Location: Right smack in the middle of one of London’s trendiest area – Shoreditch – and a stone’s throw away from Old Street underground station.

Rooms: 111 – divided into 5 categories, six of which are adapted for guests with disabilities.  As a person who is quite particular about where I lay my head, it’s the high quality of the pillow and mattresses – all of which are handmade from natural materials – that made my stay at the Z Shoreditch memorable. Each room also comes with a 48-inch television with free access to Sky channels. Fellow minibar-raiders be forewarned though – none of the rooms at the hotel feature a minibar…

Amenities: Free Wi-fi. In italics for emphasis because I’ve stayed at 5-star hotels which still charge the price of a medium-sized snack in Oslo for the basic human right it is to access the internet in this day and age. Hyperbole and #firstworldproblems aside, other amenities include a semi-self-service cafe which offers complimentary cheese and wine to guests each evening between 5pm and 8pm. There is also a help-yourself fridge containing fizzy drinks, bottled water and small pots of ice cream that is gratis after 11pm.

Who’ll fit right in: Young (or those who self-identify as young…) business and leisure travellers who like to be close to where the action is without having to pay an arm and a leg for the privilege.

Standout feature: Triple-glazed windows (for those rooms that do have windows) which for those of us who are light-sleepers is highly appreciated.

Insider Tip: Ask for an exterior-facing room as these include windows and have more space.
Rates: Double rooms from £69, excluding breakfast (£12.50). Double inside rooms start from £49.
